For the second straight season Heather Schwartzburg has broken the Quinnipiac single season strikeout record as the Bobcats split the doubleheader with Mount St. Mary’s. On Saturday, Schwartburg broke her own record, striking out eight on the day and 214 on the season.
The Bobcats (21-20, 8-4 NEC) struck first in the first game as Alex Alba drove in the Lauren Salgado on a single to right. But the lead wouldn’t last long as the Mountaineers scored three times in the bottom of the inning.
Kelly Wall brought the Bobcats within one in second with a homerun to left. The Bobcats tied the game in the third when Katie Allendorfer drove in Alex Murray with a single to left. But that was all the Bobcats would get in the first game. The Mountaineers scored four times in the fifth to take the win, 7-3
In the second game the Bobcats again struck early. Emily Bellush drove in Kim Brzezinski with a double to right in the second inning.
The Bobcats tacked on two more in the third when, after the first two batters of the inning had reached base, Wall and Brzezinski hit back to back singles to drive in runs.
The Bobcats added two more in the sixth to go up 5-0. After Heather Maffeo walked, Kim Le Bel took the pitch and smacked a drive to left for a two run homerun.
But the Mountaineers came back strong in the bottom of the sixth, scoring five times to tie the game. The Mountaineers scored five runs on just one hit in the inning, receiving help from three walks, a hit batter and an error.
But the Bobcats wouldn’t let the tie to last long. With runners on first and second and two outs, Bellush singled to right to bring home Alba from second.
Schwartzburg, who started the second game, breezed through the bottom of the seventh with no trouble to seal the 6-5 victory. She struck out five in the second game after striking out three in relief in the first game.
