The Quinnipiac baseball team lost again Thursday, falling 8-3 to Sacred Heart. Hunter Phillips’ grand slam in the fifth broke open a close game and propelled the Pioneers to victory.
The Bobcats (1-16, 1-4 NEC) struck first. Joe Poletsky’s single to right plated Mike Bartlett in the top of the first. But the Pioneers responded in the bottom half of the inning, tying the game on a sacrifice fly by John Murphy.
The Bobcats took the lead again in the top of the third, scoring twice on singles by Brian Monack and Poletsky. Once again the Pioneers responded, this time scoring three times to go ahead for good. Steve Tedesco drove in the first run of the inning on a single to left. JJ Edwards drove in two more with a double to right-center.
Phillips topped off the scoring with his grand slam and gave the Pioneers a comfortable 8-3 lead.
Pioneer starter Chris Zaccherio shut down the Bobcats from there, not giving up a hit for the final five innings.
The Bobcats and Pioneers continue their four game series with a double header on Friday.
